Smoke Detectors
Why should I have smoke detectors
in my home?
In the event of a fire, a smoke detector can save yours and your familys
life. They are the single
most important means of preventing fire related fatalities by providing
an early warning so you and
your family can escape. Smoke detectors are one of the best features you
can buy and install to
protect you and your family from fire.
Where do I put them?
Install smoke detectors on every level of your home, near the bedrooms,
and in the basement. Many
fatal fires occur late at night or early in the morning. For extra safety,
install smoke detectors inside
and outside of the bedrooms. Smoke detectors should be mounted on the ceiling
or 6 - 8 inches below
the ceiling on a wall. Since smoke and other deadly gases rises, installing
them at the proper level will
give you the earliest warning possible. Always follow the manufacturers
installation instructions
included with the product.
Where can I get a smoke detector?
Many places like Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, K-Mart, ACE Hardware and
general merchandise stores carry smoke detectors. Make sure that the detector
you buy is Underwriters Labratories
(UL) listed.
Are smoke detectors hard to install?
No. In most cases, all you will need is a screwdriver. Some detectors
also come with self
adhesive tape, so you don't even have to put it up with screws. If you are
unable to stand on a
ladder to install it in the proper location, have a friend or family member
do this for you. If nobody
is available, call your local Fire Department and ask if someone can install
it for you.
